What is cervical cancer? Cervical cancer is the growth of abnormal cells in the lining of the cervix. The most common cervical cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, accounting for 70% of cases.  Adenocarcinoma  is less common (about 25% of cases)and more difficult to diagnose because it starts higher in the cervix. It is estimated that there will be 913 cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in Australia in 2021.  The risk of a woman being diagnosed by age 85 is 1 in 162. The incidence of cervical cancer has significantly decreased since the National Cervical Screening Program began in 1991 and a national Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)vaccine program was introduced in 2007.  The chance of surviving cervical cancer for at least five years is 74%.
